Highlands-Cashiers Hospital CEO Speaks to Rotary Club

Craig James, President and CEO of Highlands-Cashiers Hospital provided an overview of Highlands-Cashiers Hospital's Affiliation Agreement with Mission Health that went into affect on February 1st.

He stated that the organizations share common values as they integrate to achieve 10 defined goals outlined in the agreement. Quality of care, recruitment and retention of physicians, and improving financial results were key priority areas. Currently two physicians are being recruited: an additional doctor for emergency care coverage at the hospital, and an additional primary care physician for Cashiers Medical Center. A physician needs assessment is underway to help define additional medical specialist models that will meet the demand for services in the area.

"We may see more specialists who will spend a day or two a week at our hospital and the other days at Mission or one of the system hospitals. That way we can still benefit from the expertise and experience of full time specialists," said James.

An example is the hospital's general surgery program, where surgeries are performed on Wednesdays by a full- time board certified surgeon shared with Brevard. Financial improvements are expected over time as the hospital moves from a stand-alone financial template to a more consolidated system in which economies of scale can be gained. The session concluded with a question of whether we will lose our "home town special touch" by going with big health system.

Craig responded by saying,"Most of the major changes are at the corporate level behind-the-scenes. Our shared value of providing personalized care will not change."
